From Bouncy Floors to a Dream Shower: A Bathroom & Kitchen Transformation

Bathroom Change

We know that a home is more than just a structure; it’s a haven. It’s where you relax after a long day and where you entertain family and friends. But what do you do when the place you call home starts to feel like a source of anxiety?

That’s exactly how our client felt. Her main bathroom had become a place of embarrassment. “She hated her nasty bathroom,” we were told. “She wanted to take showers instead of baths, but the main bathroom had a tub only.” More concerning than the style, though, was the safety of the space.

The Big Worry: A “Bouncy” and Unsafe Bathroom

Our client was terrified. Her floor felt “bouncy,” and she was genuinely worried that it might “collapse.” A bouncy floor is almost always a sign of deeper trouble, usually water leaks or structural issues, and our team confirmed her fears. The main subfloor had significant problems, and the existing tub was just beginning to develop leaks, which were compromising the floor’s integrity. It simply “didn’t feel safe.”

To make matters worse, she couldn’t even convert the tub into a shower. The bathroom had a window placed perfectly in the wrong spot—where the water from a shower head would have to go!

Our Plan: Restoring Beauty, Improving Safety, and Reclaiming Your Space

Our handyman division, Odd Jobs, took a careful look at all these issues and created a single plan to address them. This wasn’t just about a facelift; it was about structural integrity and practical daily living. Our approach covered the entire scope, from the unsafe bathroom floor all the way down to the kitchen. Here’s how we transformed this house back into a beloved home.

Phase 1: Total Bathroom Overhaul

First things first: the subfloor. We pulled up the old floor to replace the compromised subfloor, giving the bathroom a rock-solid, safe foundation. We then tackled the core issue of updating to a much-requested shower/tub combo. This meant framing a new wall for the shower and—here was the clever solution—using beautiful, durable Onyx panels. Onyx is waterproof and customizable, allowing us to safely frame and finish around that tricky window, making a full shower a reality. To finish it off, we

painted the space and installed brand new Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP) flooring for a modern, durable, and cohesive look.

Phase 2: A Kitchen Facelift

This was an older house, and the kitchen floor was showing its age. The old, glue-down tiles were peeling up, making or an uneven and unattractive surface. Since we were already putting down LVP flooring in the bathroom, we replaced the old kitchen floor with the same elegant LVP, creating a seamless and beautiful flow across the home.

Phase 3: Prioritizing Safety

Our client mentioned she was finding it “more and more difficult to get up and down stairs.” For her, it wasn’t just about style; it was about daily safety in her own home. In response, we installed a strong, reliable handrailing for the stairs leading down to the basement, immediately making her home accessible and secure.

A New Chapter of Home Ownership

The results, as you can see, speak for themselves. This homeowner can now entertain with pride and take a relaxing shower without fear, knowing her subfloor is solid and her new Onyx shower is completely waterproof. The “bouncy” floor is gone, replaced with safety and stability. She can go to her basement knowing there’s a strong railing to hold. It’s a wonderful new chapter in her relationship with her home.

At Odd Jobs, we take pride in tackling those “odd” structural and functional problems that other contractors shy away from. Whether it’s a bouncy floor or a tricky window, our team has the vision and the craft to solve it.

Home Restoration FAQ

We get a lot of questions about this type of renovation. Here are some answers that might help you decide if a similar project is right for you.

Q: My floor feels bouncy. Is that always a serious problem?

A: A bouncy floor is almost always a serious sign that you shouldn’t ignore. It can be caused by rotted subfloors (like in this case), joists that are spaced too far apart, or structural water damage. You should absolutely have an experienced contractor or handyman assess it to prevent a catastrophic failure (like the floor collapsing) down the line.

Q: Can you really put a shower head by a window?

A: Yes, you can, but you have to do it carefully. You cannot just aim water at a standard window. The key is in the materials and the execution. In this case, we used waterproof Onyx panels. They are durable, customizable, and waterproof, which allowed us to completely frame and seal the window and the walls, transforming a bathroom that was previously only for baths into a great combo.

Q: What is the difference between subfloor and underlayment?

A: A subfloor is the main structural layer of your floor, typically made of large sheets of plywood or OSB, that attaches directly to the joists. It provides the floor’s strength and rigidity. The underlayment is the thin layer that goes on top of the subfloor (but below the finished flooring), which can provide cushioning, noise reduction, and a smooth surface for your new LVP or tile. We had to replace the structural subfloor in this project to fix the “bounciness” and ensure the home was safe.

Q: Is LVP flooring good for bathrooms and kitchens?

A: Yes, Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP) is an outstanding choice for both bathrooms and kitchens! It is almost completely waterproof, making it highly resistant to spills, steam, and minor leaks. It’s also durable, scratches-resistant, comfortable to walk on, and comes in countless beautiful designs, which is why we r ecommended it to this homeowner for both spaces.
